In regards to using the oxygen port as an exhalation vent, I would not suggest doing this. The exhalation vents are designed by the manufacturer to allow release of carbon dioxide from respiration but also to regulate very specific levels of leak from the mask. If you are opening the oxygen ports the leak level would probably be too high to provide effective therapy. Essentially if the leak level is too high the machine is not giving you enough pressure to fully open your airway and apneas or hypopneas may result. If you have been using the same style of mask for four years, it is time to try something different. ResMed and other manufacturers have come out with many different styles of masks in recent years. For instance, the Mirage FX that we reviewed on our site has the exhalation vents in a different configuration than previous masks and may be a better bet than one with the vents closer to the eyes.

I have been using the ResMed mask for about 4 years. My ByPap machine is set so that the air volumn is quite high and I have had a cronic problem with the air exiting the exhaust vent drying out my eyes. I have had to make many visits to the eye doctor for treatment of a scratched or detached cornea. A few months ago I blocked the exhaust vent with a small piece of duct tape and opened the port caps to allow air to escape the mask. These ports are lower on the mask and the air is not affecting my eyes the way the exhaust vent did (the exhaust vent is located right between by eyes) I have not had the problem with my eyes since I did this and I am still getting the benefit of sleeping better through the night. Am I ok to be using the mask in this way?
